FEBRUARY 13, 2017

Near the end of the 59th Grammy Awards, three-time Grammy winner Chance the Rapper, who
blends vintage gospel and cutting edge hip-hop in his music, hit the stage for a medley of songs off
his best rap album awarded mixtape
Coloring Book.

He was joined by two forces in gospel music, as well as the evening’s fellow winners, Tamela Mann
and Kirk Franklin, making the unlikely pairing a focal point of the annual ceremony.

Backed by a full choir, the 23-year-old, who heaped praise upon God during his best new artist
acceptance speech, turned the huge stage into a full-out church service.

“Glory be to God,” the “Chain Smoker” lyricist said after winning. “I claim the victory in the name of
the Lord. Let’s go!”

It wasn’t lost on religious fans that the lyricist big-upped God multiple times throughout the night
and gave gospel singers a huge platform to shine.

“This is what I’m talking about!!!!!!! How great is our God!!!” wrote Grammy-winning gospel singer
Tasha Cobbs, captioning an Instagram video upload. It showed hher television set tuned into the
rapper’s performance with Mann and Franklin.

The 35-year-old “For Your Glory” singer expressed her approval and unbridled excitement over the
worship-filled set with a bunch of crying emojils and by calling the performance “hands down the
best moment of the night,” adding, “God will get His glory.”

The hip-hop luminary’s teaming with two of gospel’s most loved performers wasn’t at all strange to
those who know Chance The Rapper well. He has been
very open about his love of gospel music,
particularly the compositions of the man known as his favorite: the one and only Kirk Franklin.

During a May 2015 lecture at Harvard University, he told the attentive class, “One of my favorite—if
not my favorite artists, definitely my favorite composer—is Kirk Franklin.”

So it was no surprise to fans when the young rapper headlined the 2015 Pitchfork Music Festival in
Chicago’s Union Park and welcomed Franklin on stage to perform “Sunday Candy.”

Sunday night, he got another opportunity to share the stage with the “Stomp” songwriter. Only this
time, the collaboration happened in a massive arena, viewed by millions.
